About the Author

I am an instructor in the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, and Middle Level Education at Eastern Illinois University. My main areas of interest are middle school education, science education, and emerging educational technologies. Prior to joining the faculty of my alma mater, I taught middle school science for thirty-eight enjoyable years at Charleston Middle School before retiring in May 2011.

In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I am a co-investigator and the wiki coordinator for a NASA educational project titled Expedition Earth and Beyond. The goal of the project is to engage students in grades 5 through 12 in the process of science by connecting them with scientist-mentors from the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

I am a member of the Golden Apple Academy and the Director of the annual Golden Apple Summer Institute at EIU.  My additional responsibilities at Eastern include serving on the College of Education and Professional Studies Philanthropy Board, the Panther Club Board, and the University Foundation Board.
